It took air conditioning specialist Gary Dover more than four hours to get home to Wofford Heights from his work in Lake Isabella on Thursday due to a wildfire off Highway 155. Had Sierra Way been open, Dover said, he would have gladly taken the long way around the lake.

Single mother and Lake Isabella resident Ashley Metcalf was worried. Her kids were at home and she was sitting in her SUV on Highway 155 where a wildfire that started Thursday afternoon in Wofford Heights had forced first-responders to close the road that would normally get her home within minutes.

It was a mess, she said. She was running low on gas, and the electricity was out in that part of town, meaning the gas pumps at a nearby store were out of commission.
